Supergirl Starts Filming, 4 Star Wars Movie Updates, Daredevil's in the Details, and more!

This week on Superhero Slate, the DCU kicks off filming Supergirl, Star Wars movies kick into gear, Daredevil is Marvel’s Next Big Thing, and more!

• Resident Evil (5:35)
  • New movie to be written and directed by Zach Cregger (Barbarian)
  • Will be horror focused and more true to game franchise (probably first 4 games)
• The Toxic Avenger (12:35)
  • Cineverse is releasing the remake as Unrated in theaters this year
  • Sits at 92% on RT but has been deemed “unreleasable” and “not safe enough to market”
  • The remake stars Peter Dinklage as Winston Gooze, Elijah Wood, and Kevin Bacon
• The Suicide Squad (15:25)
  • Not canonical to DCU, only Creature Commandos forward
    • "For instance, Rick Flag Jr was killed because we heard Rick Flag Sr talking about it in Creature Commandos, not because we saw it in The Suicide Squad."
  • “Only CC forward is pure canon; Peacemaker is almost entirely consistent with that canon other than the Justice League; The Suicide Squad has a lot of consistencies but I think of it as an imperfect memory."

  • Character may not be dead after Creature Commandos debut per James Gunn
  • Movie could also be a prequel or not released in timeline order
• Supergirl (25:00)
  • Movie officially filming with an image from set
  • Features the House of El symbol (probably), Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El
  • Location seems to be bar first featured in issue 1 of Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow from Tom King
• Lanterns (30:00)
  • Has cast Ulrich Thomsen (The Blacklist) as Sinestro in series
    • Not necessarily a Yellow Lantern yet
  • Described as "a former Green Lantern who turned rogue and is ruthless yet undeniably charming. Sinestro’s manipulative nature drives his enduring obsession with his former mentee, Hal Jordan."
• Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi (34:00)
  • Current plan to start shooting movie in December
  • Script written by James Mangold and Beau Willimon (Andor)
    • Will probably affect Mangold’s start date for DCU’s Swamp Thing
• Star Wars: New Jedi Order (39:00)
  • George Nolfi (Bourne Ultimatum; Oceans 12) has been tapped to write script
  • Set 15 years post The Rise of Skywalker, will follow Rey’s training academy
  • Not official title but rumored to be tone of film
• Star Wars (42:30)
  • Shawn Levy’s untitled Star Wars movie is reported to have Ryan Gosling star in lead role
    • Follows up from reports that film is “moving faster than expected” and will begin filming later this year
    • Most likely release before Dawn of the Jedi but after Mandalorian and Grogu
  • Will be a standalone film, not connected to the Skywalker saga
• Star Wars: Rogue Squadron (45:20)
  • Rumor: Chris Pine is being eyed to star in film from Patty Jenkins
    • Previously teamed up in Wonder Woman franchise
  • Patty Jenkins confirmed working on script after 2023 writing strike

  • Release schedule confirmed with episode titles
  • First looks at Daredevil and Doctor Octopus , including Doctor Strange
• Daredevil (54:30)
  • Charlie Cox: Original plan for Marvel was a soft reboot approach, keeping some things but wasn’t in line with what Daredevil had been established to already be in Netflix
  • After 2023 strike, they redid an entirely new Pilot and used some previous footage to make it feel like original series

  • Rumor: Russo Bros. have signed a deal to stay with Marvel and help oversee some films, including X-Men
    • Unsure if directing or Executive Producing to help with continuity

  • Rumor: Power Pack and Kid Kaiju are front runners for first animated Marvel theatrical movie
    • Unsure if MCU tied or standalone, a la Big Hero 6
  • Power Pack has previously included Franklin Richards
  • Kid Kaiju is a new inhuman who has the ability to summon monsters he drew
